Is It Legal To Tint Headlights?

By SupportAgent User

In memory of the recently deceased actor, Paul Walker, you decide to watch a Fast and the Furious marathon. While you were watching you may have thought, “Man, my ride would look sweet with some tinted headlights.” But are tinted headlights legal in your state?

Tinted headlights are all the rage among auto enthusiasts these days. Usually, a thin film, much like the film applied to tint windows, is applied to the exterior of the headlight, letting less light out and giving the light a darker look. Tinted headlights can be dangerous when overly tinted because other drivers may have a difficult time seeing the lights. This has led some states to make driving with tinted headlights illegal.

It is up to the state in which you live to determine whether it is legal to tint headlights. However, most states weigh in on the side of making headlight tinting illegal. This is done by statute, prohibiting any film or substance from being applied to the surface of the light and also requiring that the lights be visible from a certain number of feet away. For example, in Georgia tail lights must be visible from 500 feet away and brake light must be visible from 300 feet away.
