Why Marketing is Important as a Lawyer

By SupportAgent User

You went to law school so that you could focus on practicing law. However, when you decide to go out on your own, marketing becomes an integral part of your success as a solo practitioner. If done right, marketing can be the ultimate difference between whether or not you are able to grow your practice into a full-fledged law firm.

Here are the top 3 reasons why you should start paying attention to marketing:

1) Other attorneys spend money on marketing and if you don’t, prospects will find them and not you.

Google displays 10 search results on the first page. You want to be on that first page because people usually make their choice based on those 10 options. Law firms invest a lot of money to make sure they are on that page. They invest a lot of resources to develop a frequently read blog. If you can’t get onto the first page organically, you can also pay money to be featured on the first page as a paid search result.

2) No one can hire you if they don’t know you exist.

You have to get your name out there. Start networking, join organizations, sponsor events and write blog posts on other well read blogs. These days, having an online presence is a necessity. Not only should you have a well designed website, you have to join third party legal directories and you should spend time answering questions on Q&A websites (Avvo, Quora) in order to establish yourself as an expert in a certain field of law.

3) Marketing allows you to establish a brand.

The beautiful thing about marketing is that it enables you to control how others perceive you and your firm. This is the very reason that you should spend time on your website and your profiles. Everything you put out there (online or otherwise) is a projection of yourself and your firm, so make sure you establish a consistent voice.
